Health Benefits of Nutmeg

Ground Nutmeg

health benefits

Nutmeg is a small package with several big benefits. It’s used for prevention and healing of many known conditions. Here are some most common uses of nutmeg:
  • Medically, nutmeg has strong antibacterial properties. It is effective in killing a number of cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth.
  • Like cloves, nutmeg contains eugenol, a compound that may benefit the heart.
  • Myristicin found in nutmeg has been shown to inhibit an enzyme in the brain that contributes to Alzheimer’s disease and is used to improve memory.
  • It is used in small dosages to reduce flatulence [excessive stomach or intestinal gas], aid digestion and improve appetite.
  • In Arab countries, nutmeg is valued as an aphrodisiac [substance believed to increase sexual desire].
  • Nutmeg can help to combat asthma.
  • It is also used to relax muscles.
  • Nutmeg contains 10 per cent essential oil which is a colorless or light yellow liquid. The oil is obtained by the steam distillation of ground nutmeg. Besides being used in toothpastes, cough syrups, perfumes and cosmetic industry, externally nutmeg oil is mixed with almond oil and is used to relieve rheumatic pain.
  • Nutmeg oil is used to treat toothaches. Drops of essential oil are put on cotton swab and applied to the gums around an aching tooth, sometimes also used to control bad breath.
  • Drops of nutmeg oil can also be mixed with honey to treat nausea, gastroenteritis, chronic diarrhoea and indigestion.
  • In homeopathy, nutmeg is used to treat anxiety and depression.
  • In Chinese medicine, it is used to treat impotence and liver disease.

Safety alert

  • Nutmeg should be used in moderation—a pinch or two is considered safe. However, large doses can trigger an acute psychiatric disorder. Nutmeg contains mysticism, which in large doses can cause hallucinations. Users may feel a sensation of blood rush to the head or a strong euphoria and dissociation. It can also lead to convulsions, palpitations, generalized body pain, vomiting, nausea and eventual dehydration. Followed by long, deep almost coma-like sleep, it can even cause death.
  • Pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid the use of nutmeg. It can cause miscarriage in pregnant women. It also inhibits prostaglandin production [involved in child birth process] and contains hallucinogens that may affect the fetus, if consumed in large quantities. It can also trigger dizziness, nausea and difficulty in urination.
  • Touching nutmeg can cause allergic skin reaction. It should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
Simple cures
Nutmeg can also be used to soothe common problems.
To control acne, grind 2 – 3 nutmeg seeds and add little milk to make a paste. After washing the face with warm water, pat it dry, and then spread the paste evenly over the acne. After two hours, use warm water to remove the paste, followed by cold water to close the pores. This paste also acts as a scrub to treat blackheads.
To promote sleep, drink one cup of milk boiled with 1/4th teaspoon of ground nutmeg.
To soothe eczema [red scaly patches], make a nutmeg paste by grinding nutmeg seeds with water and smear the paste over the scaly patches.
To calm chest cold, make a paste of nutmeg powder and flour with water. Cover the cotton cloth with paste and apply to the chest.
To relieve diarrhea, drink a filtered mix of 1/4th teaspoon of ground nutmeg, ? teaspoon of ground coffee in one cup of water.
Note: Home remedies should not be tried without consulting the physician.

Start your day off healthy

Learning what to eat and drink
For lent this year I decided to give up sugar.  That did not go very well.  I didn't think I ate that much but when I tried to give it up I went through withdrawals.  I was sweating, had head aches, and felt sick to my stomach.  I gave in and had some chocolate.  I felt bad. I'm glad the world was not counting on me to save them from their sins because I could not have done what Christ did.  I'm human and I'll accept that.
Around April 1st, I started thinking of what healthy meant and what I needed to do to become more healthy and get rid of some of this weight.  I started talking to my friends that I knew to be pretty healthy, I started researching foods and what the benefits were of certain foods and I started looking at my own eating habits and those of my children.  I want to set a good example for them.  It has always been difficult to prepare meals for just one adult and one child.  I say one child because Caroline has such eating issues that I make the same 3 things for her.  So, when I cook for Lauren and me it's pretty simple stuff but not enough veggies.

I'm very healthy.  The last time I was sick was 15 or so years ago.  I did the ear candling and a month later was in bed with spinal meningitis.

So here is what I came up with.

This is my morning routine.

In the morning:  One teaspoon of grape seed oil and swish it around in my mouth for 20 min.  I do this in the shower so I can spit if I gag. After I swish the oil I take some sea salt and swish that around until all the salt is dissolved.Spit.   NEVER SWALLOW.
According to an article on the Earth Clinic website3, Oil Pulling is reported to cure: "Mouth & Gum Disease; Stiff Joints; Allergies; Asthma; High Blood Sugar; Constipation; Migraines; Bronchitis; Eczema; Heart, Kidney, Lung Diseases; Leukemia; Arthritis; Meningitis; Insomnia; Menopause (hormonal issues); Cancer; AIDS; Chronic Infections; Varicose Veins; High Blood Pressure; Diabetes; Polio; Cracked Heels."
Or as Dr. Karach, one of the biggest proponents of oil pulling says, "The Oil-therapy heals totally headaches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers, intestinal diseases, heart and kidney diseases, encephalitis and woman's diseases. Preventively the growth of malignant tumors is cut and healed. Chronic blood diseases, paralysis, diseases of nerves, stomach, lungs and liver and sleeplessness are cured."4
Now that's an impressive list. And interestingly enough, there may be some truth to it -- sort of. In fact, most of the benefits of oil pulling may actually be indirect results from the one benefit that it probably is truly responsible for: eliminating mouth and gum disease.

After oil pulling I drink hot water with a slice of lemon.
DID YOU KNOW:  DO YOU KNOW WHY YOU ELIMINATE WASTE AFTER YOU DRINK COFFEE?   Hot liquid - coffee- raises your body temp and your body thinks it sick.  Your body eliminates to get rid of any parasites or bugs or viruses.  INTERESTING I THOUGHT.

After I drink lemon water I drink:   2 cups of unsweetened Almond milk with 1 tsp to Cinnamon, 1 tsp of Tumeric ,  and 1 tsp of Ginger.  Then I add a splash of Local Alabama honey and shake thoroughly.

Health Benefits of Ginger – Revealing Amazing Healing Power

Ginger is a Powerful Cancer Fighter

While ginger helps common illnesses, it’s positive effect on more serious health conditions can not be disregarded. One such serious health condition that ginger has been known to help treat for years is ovarian cancer. The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found out through their research that ginger can also destroy ovarian cancer cells. What’s more, they found that ginger triggered two types of cell death – apoptosis and autophagy. “Apoptosis…results from cancer cells essentially committing suicide. The other type of cell death, called autophagy, results from cells digesting or attacking themselves.”

All that is before work.  The Almond drink is very filling and usually holds me till lunch.
